God’s word expresses His heart for the downtrodden

Pslam 82:3-4 — Defend the poor and the fatherless; do justice to the afflicted and destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy and deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

Isaiah 61:1– The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners.

Ezekiel 34:16 — I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken, and strengthen the sick; but the fat and strong I will destroy.

Luke 4:18 — The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because he annointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

James 1:27 — Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

At Tearfund we’re focussing on five main areas. They’re what we consider the fundamentals that need to be addressed in the fight against poverty – 1) HIV, 2) tackling disasters, 3) challenging injustice, 4) restoring the environment, and 5) water, sanitation, and basic services. Tearfund is a U.K. based charity.

World Neighbors is an international development organization striving to eliminate hunger, poverty and disease in the poorest, most isolated rural villages in Asia, Africa and Latin America. World Neighbors invests in people and their communities by training and inspiring them to create their own life-changing solutions through programs in agriculture, literacy, water, health and environmental protection.


Advocacy Organizations

By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities in which we live.

Catholics Confront Global Poverty is an effort of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) call on one million Catholics in the United States to confront global poverty. Advocate with us to end hunger, disease, conflict, and other issues that affect the lives of our brothers and sisters worldwide.

ONE is a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.

The Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. Micah Challenge USA is a Christian campaign that is part of a global Micah Challenge campaign. Our aims are to deepen our engagement with impoverished and marginalized communities; and to challenge leaders to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and so halve absolute global poverty by 2015!


Governmental Programs – U.S.
The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was launched in 2003 to combat global HIV/AIDS – the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history. In 2008, a Reauthorization Act was signed into law, authorizing up to $48 billion over the next 5 years to combat global HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
